Mellow Knights: How a beard oil with no scent became our most popular

3 minute read

Braveheart Beard Oil has done research and development on many different beard oil scents over the years. Some of them came as a surprise - be it because the scent was far more successful than we anticipated, or because a scent never quite took off with the general customer base. We aren’t ashamed to try new things, so when we started seeing that people were in need of a beard oil that had no scent, we looked at an existing product of ours which would allow us to make that adaptation most readily: Mellow Knights Beard Oil.

There is a large industry in selling products with a smell: beard oils, candles, skin care products, and so much more. You can get various scents of flowers, fruits, musks, even ones that replicate your favorite fabric softeners without the harsher chemical smell. But even with the allure of these scents, there’s still a large number of people who don’t care for these smell for one reason or another.

We retained the use of coconut oil as our carrier oil for Mellow Knights without essential oils. It offers healthy fats for your beard and skin without the smell!

Why a beard oil with no scent?

The internet is a useful place in a wide array of ways and in our opinion, the companies who make the best products have learned to listen to what their customers want without having to be told directly. During our foray into the online world, we began to see a pattern emerge: People were asking for a beard oil that was unscented. There were three primary reasons for this:

1) Scented beard oils can be overwhelming if you have a sensitive nose

Some people are prone to feeling uncomfortable, nauseous, or even getting migraines from scents. Even a scent such as the traditional Mellow Knights recipe can be too much for someone with conditions such as osmophobia (which does not always refer to the fear portion of your traditional phobia, but instead refers to the general strong intolerance of strong smells). Beard oils are by function applied near the nose and almost directly underneath it, meaning that the scent wafts into the nose throughout many hours of the day. Even a few minutes can be incredibly overwhelming, so the removal of essential oils becomes the natural first step in reducing discomfort from beard oil.

2) Allergic reactions to essential oils

Some individuals have an unfortunate condition known as contact dermatitis. They have adverse reactions to essential oils coming into contact with their skin, generally resulting in varying degrees of itchy rashes. While less common, some people may also or instead experience nasal reactions, where the nose or even respiratory tract can become inflamed. These people aren’t different in their desire for healthy beard maintenance, meaning they too are in need of a beard oil without essential oils.

3) Pet safety relating to essential oils

Our research has overwhelmingly found that people are becoming increasingly conscientious of their pets’ safety, which includes that of essential oils. If you have a cat or a dog, essential oils can slowly (or in the cases of an essential oil such as peppermint with dogs, more immediately) cause harm to them in a variety of ways. Small doses of direct contact with a beard coated in a beard oil containing essential oils can quickly add up, can get on their coats and subsequently licked off, or even be licked directly off of their owner’s beard as a show of affection. As pet owners, Braveheart Beard Oil recognized the importance of crafting a solution for not only our customers, but ourselves as well. Make sure to check out our blogs about using beard oils safely with cats or with dogs, as these provide more in-depth information and links to reputable sources we used to form our decision.

Animals can get sick from essential oils contained in beard oils. This can even be from them licking their own fur after snuggling!

Making a Solution

It was clear to us that there’s a demand for a beard oil with no essential oils. As we mentioned before, Mellow Knights was the most suitable scent to adapt to the needs of many beard bearers. Deciding how best to remove the scent came with research, with pet safety being the ultimate deciding factor in the complete removal of essential oils (in fact, we have “For people with pets” as part of the option!). Even with the removal of essential oils, Mellow Knights is able to still provide nutrition and hydration to your beard’s hair follicles and chin’s skin, but now is safer and more pleasant for many to use.

If you haven’t yet, it’s time to give Mellow Knights a try. Be it for one of the reasons we listed, or you’re a newcomer to beard care who isn’t ready for a distinct scent yet, we know that Mellow Knights beard oil can bring you exactly what you need. Don’t forget to mark “No essential oils” if that’s what you want!
